"Social advance depends as much upon the process through which it is secured as upon the result itself." --Jane Addams
As our LSC experience winds to a close, the Northfield house would like to digest further the following (in no particular order of importance):
1. What was your greatest time of frustration or disillusionment, and how did you deal with it?
2. How did we/should we deal with burnout, both within the program and in the realm of social change at large?
3. Considering our roles within each organization: where do you fit in? Would you change your position in the hierarchy of the organization if you were to do it all again?
4. How do we attempt to communicate this experience to others when we return to life on the Hill?
5. What issues do each of you feel most impassioned to address in the world? How have your interests changed/narrowed during LSC?
6. What has been the role/purpose of community living in all this?
7. How do we energize our community and inspire their collaboration in the issues we're passionate about?
After LSC, we will draw upon the following in hopes of fostering further growth as leaders, citizens, and professionals:
- The Piper Center, for additional related (or completely unrelated) opportunities
- Networking connections made during our internships
- Marketable skills gained through the experience
We believe our future classes will be enriched and infused with the broadened view we've adopted through LSC. These particular experiences served to stretch our understandings and abilities, and will directly tie-in to our upcoming academic applications.
- Conducted research, wrote grants, generated and evaluated reports, contributed to websites and social media outlets
- Directly served diverse populations
- Increased fluency in the dialogue and drama of the non-profit world
We also hope to continue applying the awareness we've gleaned in LSC to our co-curricular endeavors:
- Volunteering more, either at the same organization or one similar to our intern experience
- Imploring our organizations and friend groups to get more involved in the community (volunteering, hosting/attending community events)
- Joining orgs or creating new ones to more proactively approach the issues we're passionate about
It doesn't end here.
